If you own a cat, dog, tortoise or other domestic animal, there is no need to separate yourself from it for fear of becoming contaminated.

During an epizootic, care should be taken to ensure that humans are not in contact with birds carrying avian influenza (H5N1 virus), which could contaminate them. This is why, as soon as an epizootic outbreak is identified, healthy birds will be isolated to protect them and all birds in contaminated farms will be slaughtered.

During a flu pandemic, the flu virus is transmitted from human to human. According to experts, pets are unlikely to act as vectors of the disease for humans. In turn, the risk of humans contaminating dogs and cats is low as the virus will be "humanised".

Consequently, you should not abandon your animal but continue to look after it as normal.
